The AMD 8080 Processor
AMD's business in the 1970s was not the creation of new products; it concentrated on making higher quality versions of existing products under license. For example, all of its products met MILSPEC requirements no matter what the end market was. In 1975, AMD began selling reverse-engineered clones of the Intel 8080 processor.

The AMD 9080A was a plug-in replacement for Intel's 8080, an unauthorized second source. As a result of that AMD negotiated a technology cross-license and patent cross-license with Intel in 1975 and renamed the chip 8080A.
