The Cyrix 5x86 Processor
The 5x86 processor utilizes efficient fifth-generation (Pentium class) architectural features to significantly improve performance while minimizing transistor count. It achieves this performance using a superpipelined architecture in the integer unit combined with data forwarding, branch prediction, a 16-KByte unified write-back cache, single-cycle instruction decode, and single-cycle execution.
 
The processor's built-in power-saving features automatically power down the Floating Point Unit (FPU) and other idle internal circuits, while the System Management Mode (SMM) conserves power flowing to system peripherals.
 
The Cyrix 5x86 processor is an example of Cyrix's strategy to design next-generation processor architectures that leverage existing designs. It is available in a 168-pin PGA or a 208-pin QFP package with standard 486 pinout. Though it's installed in a P24D socket on a 486 motherboard, the motherboard must have a BIOS that will support the 5x86.

I run five computers with this chip to this day. Comment: -please note, there is also a genuine -120 chip as well. I bought one at the time. It runs well at its rated 120MHz, but can't be overclocked. I have been able to overclock the 100 chips to run at 120, except for one only. It only runs at its rated 100.
As an extra comment, I have been able to overclock the Intel A80486-50 to 60MHz, and it runs fine. I tried at 66MHz, but only get a jiffy of life before no-go. I don't know whether the CPU or the M/Board chipset chips are the problem. I say this because the chipset chips are only 50MHz chips too. This is still inconclusive, because I have only ever tried one Intel -50 chip, and one m/board. Perhaps I should get hold of more Intel chips, and try them into multiple of my 486 m/boards?
