SGS
Corporate information

Italian company SGS (Societa Generale Semiconduttore) has been working in GE transistor technology in the 1950s and established a strategic relationship with Fairchild Semiconductors in 1960, creating Fairchild-SGS. Fairchild withdrew from the relationship in 1968 caused by SGS' poor financial performance. In 1971 the Italian government decided to merge SGS with Ates, a subsidiary of the Italian telecommunications company STET. SGS-Ates later aquired Mostek (1981).

The ST group was formed in June 1987 as a result of the merger between SGS Microelettronica of Italy and Thomson Semiconducteurs of France. In May 1998, the company changed its name from SGS-THOMSON Microelectronics to STMicroelectronics.

Federico Faggin, one of the designers of the Intel 4004 and 8080, started with Olivetti, moved to SGS-Fairchild and later moved to the US to join Fairchild after the split. The 4004 project brought him to Intel in 1970. In 1974 he founded Zilog, Inc. which produced a new chip design for the fledgling personal computer industry.
